About me

philipbradford42@gmail.com

I am…

… an early-career physicist and writer who sits on the junior editorial board of the HPLSE journal.

I work on various problems in nuclear fusion, magnetized plasmas and charged particle acceleration.

I volunteer regularly for the Oxford Conservation Volunteers (OCV). More information about the group can be found at this link: https://www.ocv.org.uk/

For my PhD, I studied the currents and electromagnetic
fields produced when lasers are focused onto solid matter. You can find my doctoral thesis here.

Professional Experience

Detector Scientist for EPAC EA2 at the Central Laser Facility of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory

(Feb 2024 – Present)

Work Package Leader, Laserlab-Europe Expert Group on Laser-generated electromagnetic pulses (2022-Present) I help direct the group’s Theory, Modelling, Mitigation and Applications division and wrote our Position Paper. With Vladimir Tikhonchuk, I am leading the group’s research into EMP emission from gaseous targets. See this link for details: https://arxiv.org/abs/2403.19519v2

Post-doctoral Researcher, CELIA, University of Bordeaux
(Feb 2022-2024)

Member of HPLSE Early Career Editorial Board
(2020-)
“The High Power Laser Science and Engineering (HPLSE) Early Career Editorial Board has been established to bring together a number of talented early career High Power Laser related physicists and engineers. The board advises on the future direction of the journal.”

Post-doctoral Researcher, University of York
(Jan – Jul 2021)
I finished a project developing electromagnetic field sources from the laser-induced charging of solid targets. The work culminated in a research paper in PPCF and I produced a modular Python code for simulating magnetic fields in solenoids.

PhD Researcher, York Plasma Institute
(2016 – 2020)
I performed several original experiments on the control and characterization of electromagnetic
fields produced in laser-target interactions. I received awards for research and communication.
